The promise of rain –
Thick and humid underfoot –
Soaks into the bloodthirsty earth,
Dripping down crevices,
Congealed between writhing bodies.
Promises, plunging down
Onto ground, contracted
In the clinch of labour.
Diffusing into blood streams,
Stifling screams in chest cavities;
Virile scent drags itself along,
Raw and governing:
The sweat of nations.
Prehistoric memories
Tossed between slick palms
And crushed under feet
In the subconscious rhythm
Of being.

I know I'm who I am today, because I knew you" For Good - Wicked (the musical)
I have to admit, I normally don't stop to read poetry, but the thumbnail caught my eye.
